SLATE
Mid America Slate and Stone offers genuine natural slate in an assortment of colors, lengths, widths, thickness and shape.
We do sell slate for paving but, our focus is selling #1 ASTM S-1 slate roofing from Vermont, New York, Canada and Virginia. These slates come with quarry issued warranties and a class 3 or 4 hail rating. We also source slate from Pennsylvania and occasionally good quality slates from Asia for projects south of the Mason Dixon line.
There are many varieties of slate. We have been color profiling slate color blends on existing
projects since 1981. Feel free to email us a picture of your slate roof(see Info page) and we will color profile it for you.
Colors: You can select a single color or blending is very common.
Lengths: You can be graduated or single. Standard lengths are 12'' 14'' 16'' 18'' 20'' 22' ad 24''. Longer lengths are special order.
Standard Widths: They vary per length such as 8'' x 9'', 10'', 11'', 12'' sometimes 14'', 16''.
Thickness: Standard thickness ranges by the color and quarry. Some varieties split more consistently than others while some vary.
3/16'' in no longer the goal of most quarries but - it is available.
1/4'' is the 'target' thickness
1/4'' to 3/8'' seems to be the new 'norm' and is mostly 1/4'' with the occasional 3/8.
Other possible thicknesses are 3/8'' to 1/2'', 1/2'', 1/2'' to 3/4'', 3/4'', 3/4'' to 1'', 1'' +

Domestic Slate Roof Tile Varieties Distributed
Semi-weathering Green AKA Sea Green: Is one of the most abundantly quarried slate color variety. Approximately 5% to 85% will 'weather' to buffs and tans. The degree of weathering is dependent upon select mineral content in the quarry and particular bed.
Royal Purple: Slightly weathering 5% to 15%. Usually to a purple/brown. Generally used to blend with SW Greens and grays for a traditional 'colonial blend' roof.
Non-Fading Purple: Bright rich purple color. Blend with Non-fading colors.
Non-Fading Green: A medium bright green color. Very hard and durable.
Non-Fading Gray/Green: Same as NF Green with occasional 1/2'' to 1'' dabs of subtle gray.
Vermont Clear Gray: Hard and durable with only occasional weathering from 10% to 20%. Up close the color may show a slight haze of weathering. From a distance - it looks it's original medium gray color.
Vermont Dark Clear Gray: Medium/dark gray color. In high demand from proprietary quarry.
Non-Fading "Eureka" veined Mottle Green & Purple: A blending/flowering of purple and green within each tile.
Vermont Black: Mostly black with some gray variation, slightly weathering, and very hard material.
Non-Fading Red: Tremendously hard and difficult to quarry. Generally used to blend $$$$$
Buckingham Blue/Black: Non-fading black color with an effervescent sparkle. Very hard and durable slate.
Pennsylvania Black: Softens in color to a dark gray. Typically weathers 40%. Due to 45 to 60 years life span - repair orders each Spring can effect availability.
North Country Black: Non-fading color black with excellent availability.
